WELCOME
What an exciting sale time 2025 provided. Record averages paid for bulls in the Gisborne sales, after incredibly strong sales all around the country, as quality Angus bulls attracted premiums from discerning bull buyers. We were thrilled to celebrate our 40th sale so successfully, with longstanding, and new buyers of Mt Mable genetics, getting the bulls they selected.
A highlight of the day was gifting the wonderful Angus history book to Peter Gower, whose family started buying Mt Mable bulls at the first on farm sale in 1985, and then especially rewarding for us, was presenting the same book to Les Matthews, whose family have been buying Mt Mable bulls since Allen and Maisie took bulls into the Taumarunui combined sales. Another book was gifted to the Kjestrup family as top price purchasers of Lot 6.
The breeding cow is once again the queen of farming systems in New Zealand and with the USA and Australian cattle inventory at record lows and populations all around the world turning back to red meat the future looks brighter than it has for some time. The bulls contained in the pages of this catalogue are presented to you as herd improvers.
We are pleased to introduce a couple of new homebred sires too. Once again the catalogued bull’s conformation and temperaments are wonderful or else they wouldn’t be there.

Kind regards Kevin and Megan Friel

FOREWORD
Mt Mable Angus Stud was established at Ohura in 1967 by Allen and Maisie Friel, with the majority of foundation stock acquired from the renowned Puketutu Stud. Kevin and Megan took over the stud in 1997. The stud has experienced a couple of different locations with a move to Kumeroa in 2016. The property has steep hills to keep the cows doing what they ought, and a lovely balance of very good finishing country – perfect to bring the bulls out to reveal their full potential and allow discerning cattle folk to see what their influence on their own cow herds will likely be. Sales have been held on our own property annually since 1986. The heavy soils of this property ensure that the cow herd spends limited time on the flats. Calving is managed carefully to avoid soil and pasture damage.
Mt Mable cattle are renowned for being a case of what you see is what you get – regardless of the paper work, the type and qualities of our cattle are so cemented that the bulls will breed to their type.
Our sire selection has always been careful and considered. We believe in breeding cattle based on lines of pedigree and years of improving family performance. There is no room in our herd for cattle that have been bred on any other principals.
You will note the bulls with “unnamed” old cows in their pedigree appear to be penalized by their EBV calculations – we refused to cull cows on their EBV’s and value longevity – until all the old cows are gone there may still be bulls with EBV’s that make you blink. We take the responsibility of your expectations to breed “improver” cattle very seriously, and hope that you will in turn trust us, to only offer the bulls that we believe will do just that, for your herd.
What you see is what you will get. After more than half a century of consistent breeding we should all expect nothing less.
